DIY Cute Bench

Projects are something that Jon and I absolutely love to do at our new house. We like to set a project for the weekend (almost every weekend). The project is usually decided on by how many funds we have in the bank. Some projects have consisted of gardening, some of taking found pieces of wood from around the new construction areas in our neighborhood to make new things, etc. These projects also keep us at home on the weekends, which is something we love at this point because we love our new house! And these projects like this bring such a sense of pride in our home and in our marriage.

We really needed some seating area for the back porch, but didn't have lots to spend. Like hardly anything to spend. But we knew that Finn's second birthday party was right around the corner and we really wanted to have his party at our house. So, I started looking through Pinterest like I always do when I need to get ideas. Am I the only one who goes to Pinterest before Google now? I used to be the Google queen, but it has been replaced with the best thing since sliced bread! I got lots ideas about using cheap items that could be painted and put together from home improvement store, so Jon and I went on the hunt to see what we could find. We love the re-purposed look using pallets and old wood, but we heard that it was an absolute pain to rip pallets apart in order to make something else. We decided on the cinder block look. There were tons of ideas on Pinterest, but this one caught our eye and is what we decided to base our design off of..  DIY Outdoor Seating

It turned out better than we expected and check out the awesome coffee table that my husband made to go with it at the end of this blog! Full project could possibly take an afternoon, but it took us a two days since we had to let the paint dry between coats on the cinder blocks.

Our local hardware store had the wood planks at a pretty good price. We only needed three of these. The cinder blocks ran less than a dollar a piece. We needed 8 cinder blocks.

Let the painting begin! We used the leftover paint from our house to paint the blocks and wood, which we felt like would make it look like it "went" with the house.

Painting the blocks was a little bit of a headache. They sucked up the paint pretty quick. We ended up doing two layers using white on the inside of the block and the brown color on the outside. At least I had this cutie to help out!

Mason jar drinks are a must when completing this project!

The wood planks painted very easily. We didn't sand at all, just applied the latex paint directly on the wood. After looking back, we did not have to paint each one, but we had the paint and the time!

We needed a little break so Finn could play with the neighbors.

Putting the bench together! We had to saw about 8 inches off the wood planks to get them the length we wanted. We used a regular jigsaw.

We liked the look of the planks hanging over the bricks.

The final piece is complete. Disclaimer here... I was going to attempt to sew my own cushions so that we would only have to purchase the pillows, but we ended up finding these at Home Depot and went ahead and purchased them. We loved the designs and thought it would add a little spring to our patio.

Perfect for our cozy little backyard! We ended up having to put a piece of plywood between the planks and the cushion that we also cut to size using our jigsaw (my sister gave this to me about 10 years ago and we have been using the heck out of it lately! Thanks, Jenny!).

Then Jon made this coffee table! We scored the pallet piece already put together and this was the original size. It was perfect for what we were looking for! We wanted something low since the bench is kinda low. We already had the beadboard, but had to cut it to size using a jigsaw. The board was then painted with chalk paint, distressed (it was distressed more after this picture), and polycrylic was applied.

No good!

So, I am no good at writing on here every day and that's that. Even if I were to make myself sit down and do it every night, everyone would see that my life is very predictable and very boring. I love routines (especially when it comes to Finn), so my life seems very redundant day after day. So, no more trying to make myself write a daily blog. I just ain't that chick. Since that has been discussed, life update!!!

Spring break was very relaxing and calm. Unlike in my past. I would always try and travel or have some kind of exciting events to look forward to. Not this time! Except Finn's birthday and Easter, of course. We didn't even take Finn to daycare at all! He started verbalizing so much more this week. He even said "I want my mama"! A four-word sentence! We also took him to the pediatrician for his 2 year update. Not really good news there. He has only gained 1 pound (that's right...1!) and 1 inch since his 18 month checkup. He is 4% in weight and 10% in height. I know he is healthy and he eats so much food, but it worries me a bit. We were told to keep him on whole milk and keep feeding him lots. I wish that my pediatrician would give me more guidance on the subject.

The working out has been going pretty good. I haven't been at it every single day, but I do attempt to get out on a long walk with Finn if I can't do an at-home workout or go to the gym. And guess what??? As of this morning's weigh-in at the gym (5 am workout for this girl!), I am down 7 lbs. since I have been eating better and working out! I have been working out more during the month of April, but did some in March as well. I really think that the loss is due to my eating habits mostly. It feels good!

What else should I add? We have cooked every day at home in forever. We have not been out to eat at all this month. Maybe I should make that a goal! We just love cooking at home, not to mention that is much more healthy.

Anyway.. that's it for now!

Finn's Second Birthday

It's here. We have kept him alive for 2 years... 730 days. That's impressive! And those 730 days were the best in my life. We are a family. A perfect family. I can't even start to express how much I love my son. People said that to me before I had a child and I never could have imagined that it would feel like this. He makes me laugh, makes me cry, makes me doubt myself, but makes me proud of myself at the same time. I am proud to say that he is mine! Today was such a wonderful day for both him and us as parents. He had so many friends come to visit and celebrate his birthday with him. It is amazing how many people we had here to help make his party a success with less than two years of being in Louisiana. I guess we have more people here that cared about him (and us)  than I thought. I sat back at one point and was just so overwhelmed with the love for my son and family. The only regret that I have is that more of Finn's actual family was not able to celebrate with us. Lots sent presents, though, and we tried to make him understand who they were from.

Party planning is not my forte. Maybe for Finn, but that's it. It is a lot of work! And takes a ton of time! But I am glad that it turned out as good and fun as it did. Thank goodness the rain held off! Here are some pics!

Btw.. no workout today :( I have failed a goal for this month. I was pretty busy, though!

What was I thinking?

All I can say at this point is what was I thinking?!?! I put too much on myself. That's for sure! And then we decided to make a coffee table the night before his birthday party when we should be doing other things? Seems just like something Jon and I would do! My favorite part of all of this was putting the "2" together that was a collections of photographs from his entire year. I got a little emotional during it all, but it turned out great in the end! This will prob be a tradition I do for him on his birthdays from now on. I wish I would have started at "1" though.

Workout: 1.5 miles, 20 minute at home workout. Not the best.

I decided to make cups instead of buying the real Elmo ones. I was shooting myself at about cup #4.
My sis got this shirt made for Finn for his party. It is absolutely perfect!
In the midst of all the birthday chaos, we took a trip to Uncle Nates. Why not?!
My favorite!
Start of the coffee table
We cut a piece of bead board for the top.
Almost finished! Still have to distress it and add poly.

Easter Egg Hunts and Birthday Parties

Today was such a whirlwind day! Between the daycare Easter egg, small birthday party, and preparing for Finn's party, I am exhausted. I bring it on myself. I know that. I try to do too much myself. And I try to save money by not buying the expensive character themed birthday party stuff, but end up spending hours making them myself. Oh well. It is fun... But people (including my husband) must think I am crazy at times.

Workout 4.2: 2 miles, 20 minute home workout (20 push-ups, 100 crunches, 50 sec plank, mountain climbers)
